NIGEL MCCULLOCH

This episode will air on the 23rd of December 2025

Nigel McCulloch is a New Zealand producer, writer, and co-founder of The Downlow Concept, the production company behind some of Aotearoa’s most beloved comedies including 7 Days, Hounds, Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger, Gary of the Pacific, and My Favourite Dead Person.

Growing up in Rotorua surrounded by stacks of VHS tapes from his father’s video delivery business, Nigel developed an early passion for comedy and storytelling. After studying communications, he met future collaborators Ryan Hutchings and Jared Holt, and together they launched The Downlow Concept — initially from a damp farmhouse in Matakana with a pet pig and a big dream to make great comedy.

From their early RNZ show Off the Wire, which pushed the boundaries of public radio comedy, to producing the long-running hit 7 Days, Nigel has built a reputation for championing New Zealand humour, developing new formats, and creating opportunities for local comedians to shine. His credits also extend to acclaimed documentaries like Scribe: Return of the Crusader and Hip Hop Stand Up, which explore Aotearoa’s music culture with depth and authenticity.

As a producer, Nigel focuses on developing and pitching projects both locally and internationally, guiding productions from concept to screen. His work reflects a balance of creative storytelling, business acumen, and a commitment to showcasing uniquely New Zealand voices on a global stage.
